Some people define it as roughly 1-2 years of expenses in liquid, low-risk assets — enough to leave a job, take a sabbatical, or ride out a bad market without panic-selling investments.

Why it matters

Behavioral economics research on loss aversion and financial stress consistently shows that people make worse decisions — staying in bad jobs, accepting unfair terms, avoiding necessary risks — when they have zero financial slack.
