Net worth is the single number that summarizes your financial position: everything you own (assets) minus everything you owe (liabilities). It's the foundation every other calculator on this site ultimately builds on — your FIRE number, runway, and coast FIRE progress are all measured against the invested portion of your net worth.

How it's calculated

Net worth = total assets − total liabilities. Assets typically include cash, checking/savings balances, brokerage and retirement accounts, real estate (at current market value, not purchase price), and other valuables; liabilities include mortgages, auto loans, student loans, and credit card balances. For FIRE-style planning, it's useful to separate investable net worth (cash and market-tradable investments that can fund withdrawals) from illiquid assets like your primary home, since a paid-off house doesn't generate portfolio income the way a brokerage account does.

Why it matters

Tracking net worth over time — rather than a single snapshot — reveals whether you're actually building wealth or just moving money around, since income alone doesn't capture debt paydown, asset appreciation, or spending patterns. It's also the metric lenders, and honestly your own financial planning, care about more than gross income, because two people earning the same salary can have wildly different financial security depending on savings rate and debt load.

Common pitfalls

Valuing your home or other illiquid assets at an optimistic, non-market price inflates net worth in a way that doesn't reflect real spending power. Another common mistake is ignoring taxes embedded in tax-deferred accounts (a traditional 401(k)/IRA balance isn't fully "yours" — withdrawals will be taxed), which means two accounts with the same balance aren't equally valuable for spending purposes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my net worth?
Add up everything you own (cash, investments, retirement, property, vehicles) and subtract everything you owe (mortgage, loans, credit-card and other debt). Assets minus liabilities is your net worth.
What counts toward net worth?
Assets: liquid cash, taxable and retirement investments, real estate and valuable possessions. Liabilities: mortgages, student and car loans, credit-card balances. For an exit plan, the liquid portion matters most.
What should my net worth be by age?
One common guideline is ~1× your annual salary saved by 30, 3× by 40 and 6× by 50 — but these are averages, not targets, and vary widely by income, location and goals.
Net worth vs liquid net worth?
Net worth includes illiquid assets like home equity and retirement you can't easily tap. Liquid net worth counts only what you could spend soon — cash plus accessible investments — which is what actually funds a career break or early exit.
